Ash Barty is now just two wins away from the world number one ranking, after defeating Venus Williams to reach the semi-finals of Birmingham‘s Nature Valley Classic.

The young Aussie started strong by winning five games in a row, and eventually took the match by beating her rival 6-4 6-3 to advance to the semi-finals.

Her next opponent will be Czech player Barbora Strycova, who she will face on Saturday in the UK.

Naomi Osaka currently sits atop the world rankings, and Barty will take that spot if she advances to the final and is victorious on Sunday.

Speaking with BBC News about her potential to take the top spot, she said:

“You start to think ahead, it’s natural, it happens. It’s important for me to come out and focus tomorrow [Saturday]. Whatever happens, happens.”

Earlier this week, firebrand Nick Kyrgios heaped praise on Barty in a press conference, tipping her to win at Wimbledon.

“She’s probably the most talented tennis player I’ve seen in a long time,” he said.

“Australia has been waiting for that next player to win [Wimbledon], and I think she’s our best chance. She’s amazing, she’s gonna pile them up.”
