It is being decreed (if it happens)that Alessandro del Piero will sign the biggest deal in A-League History. $2 Millionish for 37 year old veteran with 513 club games under his legs doesn’t exactly scream value for money on the face of it, but del Pearo is a bonafide Italian Football super star. No questions. And in a sporting landscape where the A-League is still trying to carve out it’s fair share, the money would not be thrown at him purely for the damage he could do on the field.
As a household name import, del Piero, would bring in the crowds. And not just the dedicated football fans, as the average crowd numbers in the ballpark 10 000 across the country points to a dedicated core group of supporters. No, with del Piero, we’re talking sell out crowds, with the casual observers who still call it soccer, flooding through the gates to see the Italian striker in the flesh. At that price and at his age, he sure as shit won’t be around forever but in just one season, del Piero has a genuine chance of converting a few of the the sporting fence sitters into real fans.
