Spare a thought for A-League goal keepers across the country as Alissandro del Piero confirms he will be joining Sydney FC this season. For a cool $2 Million, the Sky Blues out bid a host of European club including Scottish powerhouse Celtic. Beaches, beers, babes or a Scottish winter? It must have been a tough choice.
It’ obviously a pretty sweet deal for the former Juventus and Italian legend, but his signing is massive coup for Sydney FC and the A-League. The shot term gains are obvious. As previously reported, del Piero simply lacing up a boot will have fans flooding through the gates. Expect full houses when Sydney hit the road and expect Sydney’s home ground attendance aggregate to be smashed. But already there is talk, as were detailed in the two hour phone conference with his management team, of the legacy del Piero will leave. A successful season for the 37 year old veteran will not only lift the standard of play in the A League as a whole, but also encourage other players of his caliber to turn the backs on the miserable European winters. And the kids. Think of the kids.
