Fear The Ocean In Shailene Woodley’s New Survival Flick ‘Adrift’

What’s that? A survival film that’ll make you fear the ocean and stars Shailene Woodley and Sam Claflin – well sign me the hell up. Adrift is the unsettling true story of Tami Oldham and Richard Sharp who decide to throw caution to the wind and sail the sea from Tahiti to San Diego. If you thought this might be a cruisey travel film like The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, you couldn’t be any more wrong because Hurricane Raymond appears and gives real reason for Thalassophobia – that’s the fear of the ocean and ocean travel.

The tropical hurricane struck in 1983 and quickly evolved from strong winds to a full blown hurricane with wind speed flying at 235 kilometres per hour. Translation: it was pretty damn bad. Pair a hurricane with the ocean and you get impossibly high waves – some of which you get to see terrifyingly CGI’d in the trailer.

So as you quickly learn from the trailer, Tami and her fiancé Richard are an extremely loved up couple set with the task of delivering a mighty yacht to San Diego. Everything pre-hurricane is sweet and romantic making the knowledge of everything post-hurricane absolutely heartbreaking.

After sailing straight into the hurricane, Tami wakes below deck with a deep gash on her head, in the middle of the ocean with no land in sight and Richard floating in the water. He’s seriously injured with broken ribs and a broken leg leaving Tami to try and repair the yacht to the best of her abilities.

Enjoy the trailer and prepare to feel 10/10 uncomfortable by the end of it.

Not gonna lie, the trailer looks bloody intense and it’s taking a lot of willpower not to google the real people and find out what happened.

Shailene is known for her performances in Big Little Lies and The Fault in our Stars while you might remember Sam from his stint in The Hunger Games as Felix and as Will Traynor in Me Before You.

Adrift comes out June 28 in Australian cinemas.
