Who’s Next In Line To Replace Baird In NSW’s Top Job?

With the departure of Mike Baird from politics, and his announcement that he’s stepping down due to serious health issues within his immediate family, the question now turns to the obvious: who will be the next Premier of New South Wales?

The most obvious choice for next Premier is Treasurer and Industrial Relations Minister Gladys Berejiklian, who would be the second woman to take the top job after Kristina Keneally if elected. Formerly Transport Minister, Berejiklian’s key achievement was the introduction of the Opal card – a program which is, if we’re honest, still troubled by a number of teething issues.
The smart money is definitely on Gladys, and 2GB reports that she’ll announce a stand for the Premiership tomorrow – avoiding an announcement on Baird’s big seeya later day.

But despite the fact that the Berejiklian train disengaged its brakes as soon as Baird make his announcement, it’s really not so cut and dry at the moment. In fact, there’s reportedly been stirring among the Coalition ranks as to whether Gladys will be able to win an election. For the record, said election would be in 2018.

The reason ‘including moderates’ is a concern is that Berejiklian is considered part of the moderate wing of the NSW Liberals. Which is no small fact – the Libs in NSW are known for harbouring a powerful hard right faction known alternately as the Uglies and The Taliban. Charming.
According to the Daily Telegraph, there are two Right figures testing the waters for a run:

Transport Minister Andrew Constance is said to be making calls to test support for the leadership and Planning Minister Rob Stokes is said to be considering running, and on his way back from London.
But there’s also chatter that Berejiklian could neutralise these moves from the Right by making a deal which would plonk Finance Minister Dominic Perrottet in the deputy’s role and secure broad party room support.
So smart money is on Gladys after all. But we’ll find out next week, won’t we?
