Porn’s pretty divisive – people love it; people hate it; people who publicly hate it often privately love it.
But, despite all these conflicting opinions, the world keeps turning, we keep hiding our fantasies in a folder named ‘schoolw0rk’ (or we did at some stage, at least), and we keep judging other people’s choices. We should probably stop that last one, yeah?
And the best way to break down stigmatisation of something is by talking about it, and so that what Triple J‘s Tom Tilley decided to bloody do.
He’s hosting a Hack on Triple J special on ABC2 tonight, called ‘Australians on Porn’. Which looks totally excellent, because what’s better than gaining fiendish sexual knowledge while simultaneously breaking down barriers?
So, let’s talk about porn with the man who’s gonna be on your screens talkin’ about porn tonight, Tom Tilley:
P.TV: What’s the most surprising thing you learned from doing the special?TT: One shocking finding was the popularity of MILF porn. I think mums around Australia deserve a congratulations for that. Quite troubling though was the fact ‘teen’ is the second most popular porn genre Australians are watching on PornHub. I mean WTF? I think that’s quite concerning.P.TV: Was there anything confronting about doing the special?TT: I’ve seen some things I will never unsee in preparing for this show. The most confronting was beastiality which some people (somehow) think is a legitimate genre of porn. I’d also never seen Bukkake porn before. I will never get my head around that.
P.TV: Was was the best thing you saw while doing the special?TT: The best thing I will see will happen tonight during the show. I can’t wait to see people bravely share their stories and passionately argue about an issue that people almost never talk about openly.
P.TV: Exactly how much did you see on the porn set? You know what we’re talking about.TT: Ha!!! Not enough. To stay within MA15+ we couldn’t show dicks or vaginas. Breasts and pecs aplenty tho!
P.TV: Which sexual position was the most popular on the porn set & why?TT: I’ve certainly been awakened to the incredible power and flexibility of the human body. The ingenuity people demonstrate in the quest for new ways of orally stimulating each other gives me great hope in our ability to solve the world’s most complex engineering problems.
P.TV: So, what kinda porn do we like the most?TT: The PornHub Australia stats give us the best indication. Category #1: Lesbian, #2 Teen, #3 Babysitter, #4 MILF, #5 Big Dick.
P.TV: I read a Pornhub survey that said that Australia was the only country that didn’t search for our own nationality when looking for porn. Like people in Italy commonly searched for ‘Italian FFM threesome’ rather than just ‘FFM threesome’, but we don’t look for Aussie porn commonly at all. Why do you reckon that is?TT: I think given we’re part of the broader English speaking world and that anglo saxon Australians have no traits that make us particularly distinct from the hundreds of millions of other white people in the world… as a nation we have less unique physical traits to fetishise.
P.TV: How do you think porn is going to change in the next 10-20 years?TT: Technology will blur the lines between sex work and porn. Virtual reality will mean you can engage with porn stars like you can with sex workers. That will be a bombshell for relationships, but great for people who’re struggling to navigate sex and intimacy in the real world. I personally wonder whether the more technology allows us to separate sex and emotion the more people will value the emotional connection you get from loving real life sex.
