FFS Wearing A Mask Isn’t A Political Statement, It’s A Sign That You’re Not A Selfish Asshole

A self-proclaimed “world class MMA fighter” has seemingly confused doing your bit to stop the spread of a highly-infectious virus with a communist dictatorship, swearing that he “will not comply” with Dan Andrews’ order to wear a mask in public.

Former UFC fighter Vik Grujic (who unironically calls himself “the spartan”) has slammed the new rule, likening Andrews’ leadership to that of a dictator, which is just *really* not it.

“I will never bow to a dictatorship. I’m a proud Aussie. Born free. Will die free,” he tweeted on Sunday.

“I will not wear a mask. I will not pay a fine. I will not comply. I will not bow down to you.”

In case you missed it, Victoria today announced that all residents over the age of 12 must wear a mask when out in public. You know, because we’re in the midst of a dangerous pandemic and we should all be doing our part to help minimise the spread.

Grujic, who is just one of countless people to speak out against mask-wearing, seems to think that being asked to wear a mask is some evil ploy by the Andrews government to take away your freedom. And hoo boy, this is a trivial hill to die on.

Wearing a mask has precisely fuck all to do with taking away your freedom and *everything* to do with minimising the spread of coronavirus. You know, that deadly virus that is spreading across Australia faster than ever before.

To be quite frank, it’s not a political statement at all. But if you *really* want to get political or patriotic about it, why not wear a mask to protect your fellow Australians and prove that we’re a country who are willing to sacrifice a teeny, tiny bit of our personal freedom for the greater good of the population?

that's hot gif
Caring for your fellow Australians? That’s hot (and patriotic).

Overseas, particularly in Asian countries, people wear masks year-round in an attempt to be more considerate of other people. It’s not a political statement, or a sign that they’re more prone to illness, it’s more like a little badge that says “hey, I’m not an asshole.”

We’re in the middle of a pandemic. Yes, a pandemic. Say it with me now: PAN-DEM-IC. And you know what? It’s time that we all just wear our damn masks and get on with it.

So, with that being said, your mask is now your designated “I’m not an asshole” badge. If you, or your mates are actively choosing not to wear a mask, I’m sorry but yes, that makes you the asshole.

Don’t be *that* guy.
