Triple M Reckons Your Outrage At Eddie McGuire Was Punishment Enough

Ah, dear. Triple M has put out a statement saying they won’t be taking any further action against Eddie McGuire, because outrage at his continual boofhead ways is apparently punishment enough.

“Triple M has carefully considered whether further disciplinary action is required and believes that the public censure of the comments and the actions taken by the AFL community should be sufficient incentive for a change in behaviour,” the statement said, forgetting every other time Eddie McGuire has proven this to be not true.

While not going so far as to name names, the statement said that “all broadcast staff” (Eddie) were reminded that joking about violence against women is not okay, and that “all on air staff” (Eddie) will be undergoing training from White Ribbon (do you think they mean Eddie?).

“The broadcast staff of all Triple M stations have been reminded that language of this nature is not acceptable and there is no context that makes it acceptable. We recognise that continued and further education is necessary to ensure that all staff understand what is acceptable and what won’t be tolerated.”

Unfortunately, Triple M’s parameters of what “won’t be tolerated” appears to be different to everyone else’s.

Already thousands of people have signed a petition calling for his sacking, and Richmond FC have boycotted Triple M altogether. No interviews, no statements – nada.

But like a bad smell, or a roach infestation, or a powerful straight white man who’s also a total bonehead, McGuire will stick around to offend another day.

Collingwood CEO Gary Pert has issued a statement to anyone still debating whether Eddie McGuire’s comments were right or wrong (hint: they were not right).

“We know the answer: Eddie has already stated that what he said was inappropriate and for that he has apologised,”
said Pert.

“The conversation now, for everyone, should be about personal responsibility. This is an opportunity for all of us to ask ourselves about what constitutes respect for women.”
