Tightening of Puppy Farm & Animal Abuse Laws Fast Tracked In NSW

The incumbent NSW government have fast tracked laws regarding puppy farms and animal abuse, according to the Sydney Morning Herald.

Legislation which was intended to be implemented after July 1 have now already been passed – these laws will change how controversial puppy farms will operate in NSW—allowing bodies such as the RSPCA and local councils to more easily seize domestic animals from abusive or unhealthy living conditions.

According to SMH, there will be a greater effort to curb puppy farming, with more pressure put on cat and dog breeders to register as such. Councils will now also reject any breeder applying for registration who has a record of animal abuse within the last ten years. It’s relatively horrifying to realise that this was not the case in NSW before these new laws were implemented, but it’s progress all the same.

During the 2015 NSW State election, the Labor party also made animal rights a priority in their campaign, including the ban of puppies being sold at pet stores as an election promise if they had been successful.

In January this year, the RSPCA conducted a raid on a puppy farm in Northern NSW with “appalling conditions.”

RSPCA CEO Liz Walker praised the reforms, telling Fairfax that they would “break the business model” of puppy farms in the State.

We’ll drink to that. In Dogs we trust.
