Getting sick in Australia is far less shit than it could be, thanks to that shiny green piece o’ plastic that resides in your wallet. Still, Medicare isn’t something we tend to think about until we’re reaching for that card post-rubber glove action.
You better believe Bill Shorten and his merry band of positive pollies have been trying to frame the Liberals as deadset on privatising the system, despite their fervent protestations.
Has anyone else received this text message? Is Labor pretending to be Medicare? #ausvotes #democracysausage pic.twitter.com/u5rimbWIPu

Got this text from ‘Medicare’ today. Clearly from ALP. Deceit of the highest order. How is this legal? @leighsales pic.twitter.com/53aIjUaIjq

In a statement to news.com.au, Health Minister (well, for the next few hours, at least) Sussan Ley said the messages 100% weren’t sent from Medicare itself, going as far to call ’em “desperate and deceitful.”
Fair crack of the whip, if the ALP is actually behind them. Not only would the messages blur all kinds of lines regarding political advertising, it’s a lil’ shifty attempting to impersonate a technically apolitical body for very political gains.
FWIW, Labor have come out and denied any responsibility for the messages. The mass mail-out also comes after the Labor-lovin’ Australian Council Of Trade Unions doled out stacks of fake Medicare cards earlier in the week:
That union went ahead and said they’ve got nothin’ to do with today’s messages, either. Hell, maybe Labor have been hammering the issue so long, Medicare really did start freaking out and sent the messages. It’s 2016, who bloody knows.
