Speculation Abounds That Stereosonic Might Really Be Done For This Time

Stereosonic is likely done. At least, according to The Daily Telegraph.

Following up on apparent industry speculation about the festival’s future, the paper attempted to get comments out of the festival’s organisers Totem OneLove Group and SFX Entertainment.

When that failed, the paper reports they spoke to the festival’s co-founder Frank Cotela, who remains involved as a consultant. He said “I just don’t know what is going on there at Stereosonic.”

He also intimated he might be interested in working on another festival in the future. If you’ll allow us to wildly extrapolate, that could suggest his affiliation with Stereo may be under question.

Of course, concerns about the festival’s continual existence have been exacerbated by summers’ string of tragedies. Both 25-year-old Sylvia Choi and 19-year-old Stefan Woodward died after taking illicit drugs at the Sydney and Adelaide legs of the festival, respectively.
Stereosonic have publically came out in favour of on-site pill testing at music festivals, saying “we would strongly support any policies or initiatives that would minimise harm, reduce drug use and make events a safer environment for patrons.”

However, many state governments remain vehemently opposed to the proposal; that factor, combined with looming financial struggles of Totem OneLove’s international presence, are suggestive of deep problems for the musical juggernaut.

Following the festival’s recent horror run, News Corp also reports a sizeable number of contributors to the festival have left the business. To clarify, again, there’s been no official statement about the festival’s future, but if this one’s legit? Shit. It’ll be the end of an utterly shredded era.
