Trump Floats The Idea Of A Space Force, Which Is Like The Army, But In Space

Well, it’s finally happened: Donald Trump has floated the idea of a military arm in space. To uh, fight space wars.

“Space is a war-fighting domain, just like the land, air, and sea. We may even have a Space Force, develop another one – Space Force. We have the Air Force, we’ll have the Space Force, we have the army, the navy,” he told a crowd of service members at the Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in San Diego on Tuesday.

“You know I was saying it the other day – because you know, we’re doing a tremendous amount of work in space – I said maybe we need a new force, we’ll call it the Space Force. And I was not really serious, and they said, ‘What a great idea, maybe we’ll have to do that’.”

Wonderful. Trump is going to blow up the moon.

According to CNBC‘s Christina Wilkie, who first reported on the news, Trump’s Space Force comments were off-script, and the White House didn’t respond to a request for comment. She noted that it wasn’t clear if the whole thing was a joke or not, but tbh, saying things that earn him applause has informed most of Trump’s major policies.

“So think of that, Space Force,” Trump continued. “We are spending a lot and we have a lot of private money coming in, tremendous. You saw what happened the other day, and tremendous success. From the very beginning, many of our astronauts have been soldiers and air men, coast guard men and marines. And our service members will be vital to ensuring America continues to lead the way into the stars.”
