Schapelle Corby Has Reportedly Attempted To Commit Suicide

Reports emerging out of Indonesia this afternoon indicate that convicted Australian drug smuggler Schapelle Corby has threatened to commit suicide. Indonesian officials visiting the Kuta residence in which Corby currently is staying with her family say she lunged for a knife with the apparent intention to harm herself.

“I can’t tell someone’s intention, but what I saw in front of me was that she tried to commit suicide,” said head of the corrections division of the Bali justice office, Sunar Agus, one of the officials present at the time. “She took a knife, but the family stopped her and the parole officer stopped her.”

The report comes with mounting speculation authorities are almost certainly considering revoking her parole following what the Indonesian public considers an affront on their legal system after the Corby family flirted with breaching the conditions of her parole by openly discussing details concerning her arrest and incarceration in a documentary which aired on Channel Seven last weekend.

Indonesian justice and human rights minister, Amir Syamsuddin, who approved her release on parole in the first place, says claims sister Mercedes made in the program that the cannabis found in Schapelle’s boogie-board bag had originated in Indonesia has intensified public outrage over what was already an unpopular decision.
“If it came to that decision,” Mr Amir said, speaking of the likelihood of revoking parole and sending Corby back to Kerobokan prison. “You would have to lay most of the responsibility on her family, which I believe has shown no concern for [the political pressure] we’ve had to face in her case.”
