Refugees Were At The Same Hotel As A Bunch Of Furries And It Was Weird

File this one under “Forgive us Father, for we have sinned”.

As you’d be well aware, the world is currently experiencing its greatest refugee crisis since World War II. The sheer volume of refugees entering nations across the world means that they sometimes need temporary digs while a more permanent solution is prepared.
In Canada, refugees from Syria were being temporarily set up in the Executive Airport Plaza in Vancouver – which, coincidentally, was also where annual Canadian furry convention VancouFur was being held. The result? The most absurd clash of cultures that the modern world could possibly permit.
If you’ve been living under a rock/have never been on the weirder corners of the web, furries are people who love dressing up as anthropomorphic animals. Basically big animal costumes called fursuits. It’s odd, but each to their own.
The immediate response from the web was a bit of horror – the furry fandom is usually immediately associated with, uh, animal costume sex. It’s hard to know exactly how much of that funny business was going on at VancouFur, but attendee Chris Jantz told The New York Daily News that while sex was a “definite part” of the furry fandom, it was not required.
Jantz further elaborated that he didn’t think the Syrian kids were particularly familiar with furry fandom – because why the hell would they be – but they seemed to like the giant fox-people regardless.
Yeah.
