Orangutan Briefly Escapes At Melbourne Zoo, Sends It Into Lockdown

Melbourne Zoo went into lockdown this afternoon, when one of their orangutans looked around his enclosure and decided to bust the fuck out.

According to reports, Malu the 11-year-old Sumatran orangutan used a blanket to break the top wire of his enclosure.

Melbourne Zoo went immediately into lockdown. The public were moved along to safe areas, while zoo staff cornered, tranquillised, and escorted Malu back to his enclosure. “At no time were visitors or staff in danger,” a spokesman told The Age.

In light of these events, it’s worth noting that Malu is described on the zoo’s website as “adventurous” and “a good climber”.

Melbourne Zoo took a decidedly chill approach to the escaped orangutan.
