Only Suspect Arrested After Brussels Released Due To Lack Of Evidence

The only person to have been arrested in relation to the terror attacks in Brussels, which claimed the lives of 35 victims and injured more than 300, has been released after a judge found there was no evidence to justify holding him.

The man, known only as Faycal C, was identified by Belgian media as the mystery third man in CCTV footage released by authorities last week.

He was arrested on March 24 and charged with “participation in the activities of a terrorist group, terrorist murders and attempted terrorist murders”. According to Belgian media these charges remain, despite his release.

In a statement, the Belgian federal prosecutor’s office said:

“The clues that led to the arrest of Faycal C were not substantiated by the ongoing inquiry.

“As a result, the subject has been released by the examining magistrate.”

There are, however, at least eight people currently detained in Brussels on suspicion of terrorist activity, four of whom are charged in relation to the Paris attacks last December.
