One Dead, One Seriously Injured After Shopping Trolley Crash In Sydney

One man has died and another seriously injured after a fatal ride in a shopping trolley in Randwick in Sydney’s east last night.

The two men, both aged 28, were riding the trolley down Coogee Bay Road just after midnight last night, when they crashed into a car at the Judge Street intersection.

Both men were thrown from the trolley and critically injured. One man suffered critical head injuries and died at the scene, while the other has been taken to St. Vincent’s Hospital suffering serious injuries. The driver of the vehicle and a passing cyclist attending to the second man until paramedics arrived.

The driver of the car, a 45-year-old man from South Coogee, was not hurt during the crash, but was taken to hospital for mandatory blood and urine testing.

Both men were originally from Sweden; one had been studying in Australia for the past two years, and one had arrived a week ago to visit him.

“It sounds like they might have had a bit of fun together, resulting in this terrible incident,” Fairfax reports Chief Inspector Chris Stiles as saying, who estimates the men reached speeds of up 80km/h.

Police are investigating whether alcohol contributed to this tragedy, and are appealing for witnesses to come forward.
