Melbourne Woman Dies After Falling Off Cliff On Japanese Pilgrimage Trail

An Australian woman has died after falling off of a cliff on Japan’s Kumano Kodo pilgrimage trial.

Japanese media reported on Friday that the fire brigade was called to the trail around Tanabe, on the island of Honshu, around 12pm and found the woman unconscious about 40 metres below the cliff’s edge. She was taken to hospital but died four hours later.

The Kumano Kodo trail is a UNESCO world heritage-listed walk that takes between four and five days. Police told media the woman was walking with a friend

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said in a statement it was providing assistance to the family of a woman who had died in Japan.
