Marriage Equality Update: 72% Of Australians Know What’s Up

This just in: 72% of Australians are chill guys and gals who believe in equality.

A nation-wide telephone survey of a randomly selected sample group of 1,000 Australians has found that most people believe same-sex couples should be allowed to marry, much in the same way different-sex couples currently can.

The poll found a majority of those identifying with major religions / older Australians (55+) / people across all states and regions / heterosexual people / people with children supported marriage equality.

As the national director of Australian Marriage Equality, Rodney Croome, put it: “With Australians across all key demographics supporting marriage equality in record numbers, it’s fair to say the public has made up its mind, the community debate is over, and it’s time for politicians to act.” He also pointed out that the percentage of Aussies who support marriage equality is higher than it was in many of the countries where reform became a reality.

The poll also found that 77% of those surveyed (including 61% of those opposed to same-sex marriage) support a conscience vote on the issue.

Meanwhile, whilst speaking with ABC Radio todaySenator Penny Wong reminded folks that her mate, Deputy Opposition Leader Tanya Plibersek, has already promised to introduce a bill into the lower house for marriage equality when Tony Abbott grants a conscience vote.

“We don’t want this to fail again – we want a debate which has the capacity of a bill passing, and marriage equality being achieved but to get that we’ve got to have Tony Abbott being prepared to allow his party to vote with their conscience,” said Wong.

And then, of course, this happened yesterday.

Tony Abbott, babe. It’s time to allow that conscience vote.
