The former owners of Kings Cross venue Dejavu Bar, John Barakat and Dominic Kaikaty, are the first people to ever be dealt a lifetime ban from holding an Australian liquor licence.
Some of the breaches include repeatedly supplying alcohol to minors, supplying drugs, not having a Responsible Service of Alcohol marshal on duty, and repeatedly failing to produce information and records.
They have also allegedly shown a great deal of contempt for local authorities and have made inflammatory comments to police on social media, which include a photo on the bar’s Facebook page of Barakat, Kaikaty and others with their middle fingers in the air, and the caption: “Fuck You Kings Cross LAC.”
Late last year, The Daily Telegraph reported that Barakat owed just under $12,000 in fines, for a string of breaches.
Acting Premier and Police Minister Troy Grant said in a statement that the state government won’t “tolerate licensees running a venue like it’s a Hangover movie”.
Dejavu Bar has since closed (obviously), and another venue has opened in its place, with new owners and no association to previous management.
