Keep Sydney Open Calls On Mike Baird’s Successor To Help Fix What He Broke

While most detractors of the soon-to-be-former NSW Premier Mike Baird have been revelling hard in the news of his retirement from politics, Keep Sydney Open ain’t one of them.

In a statement posted to Facebook, the anti-lockouts movement said they “never hoped for Premier Baird’s resignation, instead we hoped he would be a constructive partner who’d pursue smart policy that could make Sydney both vibrant and safe.”

Obviously, that didn’t happen, or else this weekend’s KSO Rally wouldn’t be happening.

“Under Premier Baird’s lockout laws Sydneysiders have seen the city’s international reputation tarnished, and its vibrancy, energy and positivity diminished. Inner-city small businesses have been devastated, and crashing gate receipts for music and performance in the state of NSW threaten the future of the cultural life of the state,” KSO said.

“The Premier’s statement today reflected on the successes of Andrew Stoner, Troy Grant, John Barilaro and himself, but anyone can put on a hard-hat and claim the work of bureaucrats. Instead, we reflect on their failure to address Sydney’s night time economy. They proved themselves to be out of touch and not listening. Many people and businesses are suffering but they’re too removed to see it. Their lack of leadership has failed the community.”

Thank you, NSW. It has been an honour.

KSO assured fans that their campaign wasn’t ending with Baird’s political career, and that they’re ready to work with the new NSW leader – for which NSW Treasurer Gladys Berejiklian is a top contender – to revitalise Sydney “with smart solutions to guarantee fun, culture, economic opportunity and safety for all of us.”

Speaking to media today, Baird cited serious health issues facing his family and achieving everything he set out to do as reasons for his shock departure. (It was so shocking, in fact, that NSW Nationals leader John Barilaro only found out about Baird’s resignation when reporters told him.)

KSO’s rally this Saturday night – which a special performance from Flight Facilities – is still going ahead.
