Extremely successful Indigenous model Samantha Harris has taken to Instagram to lay down the law on “keyboard warriors” who’ve been leaving racist comments on her photos.
Accompanying what she calls an “unflattering” photo of herself (rude of someone to look this good in a photo they consider “unflattering”, tbh), she wrote a lengthy comment explaining that she didn’t care about less than flattering photos – what she does care about is the hurtful comments people leave, apparently with no thought for her emotional wellbeing.
Definitely not a flattering photo of me but that’s ok
We can’t be ready for a photo all the time
But what does get me down is that all the negativity that one photo can cause
The amount of hurtful & racist comments I receive is unbelievable I would never go out of my way to say that about another human
I’m not one to rant and I never do as this isn’t the first time it’s happened but enough is enough
I’m not everyone’s cup of tea and I’m totally fine with that
I love my job I love the fact I can inspire so many women but these keyboard warriors don’t even understand how hurtful their words can be
It’s almost impossible to imagine someone being cruel to Harris, whose social media presence is literally nothing but positivity and being really photogenic, but here we are.
Harris spoke out about racism in the fashion industry in 2013 as well, telling reporters:
I would love to see more diversity on the catwalks and in campaigns because Australia itself is such a multicultural country, why don’t we celebrate that.
Fortunately her comments section is now filled with people voicing their support for her – as it bloody should be – with one commenter summing it up thus:
As one of the mere mortals who have had the pleasure of seeing first hand how professional, humble and full of love you are, I can only say that those gutless assholes are so beneath you. You are gorgeous inside and out.
Well said. Now can everyone else please chill the fuck out? Instagram is stressful enough without the vitriol.
