Here’s How To Get Home Safely If You’re In The Melbourne CBD Today

The on-going incident in the Melbourne CBD comes not only in the middle of a working day, but on a Friday as well. And the incident, in which 3 people are now confirmed dead, is the subject of a massive police investigation.

Victoria Police are urging people to avoid the CBD for the rest of today and tonight, as they process the massive crime scene on Bourke Street.
This, naturally, raises questions about how people navigating public transport can get home safely tonight.
Metro Trains and Yarra Trams have now issued statements, and we’ve compiled all the information that you’ll need to know in order to get home safely to your loved ones tonight.
Firstly, latest reports suggest that Bourke St is closed between King St and Spring St. This affects pretty much all tram transport across the entire network.
Yarra Trams are advising the following:
  • Routes 96 and 86 that ordinarily travel down Bourke St are being diverted via La Trobe St instead.

  • Routes 19, 57, and 59 which ordinarily travel down Elizabeth St, are terminating at Melbourne Central.

  • Route 55 is not operating between Queensberry and Market Streets until further notice.

  • All trams that travel along Swanston St are not operating between Melbourne Central and the Arts Centre. This includes routes 1, 3, 3a, 5, 6, 16, 64, 67, and 72.

  • Both the 12 and 109 trams that ordinarily travel down Collins Street are being diverted via La Trobe St.

  • Route 11 trams are terminating at 101 Collins St.

  • 48 trams in both directions are operating between North Balwyn and Flinders St West via Flinders St.

Buses are also experiencing delays and diverted routes, with Public Transport Victoria confirming the following:

  • Route 605 is only operating between Olympic Boulevard/Alexandra Avenue and Gardenvale.
  • Routes 200, 207, 250, and 251 are all terminating at Queensberry St.
  • Routes 216, 219, and 220 are diverting via Spencer St, Dudley St, and Wurundjeri Way.
  • Routes 232, 234, 235, 236, and 237 are terminating at Southern Cross Station.
  • Routes 302, 304, 305, 905, 906, and 907 are terminating at Victoria Parade/Gisbourne St.
  • Routes 309 and 350 are terminating at Parliament Station.
The good news, if you can call it that, is that Metro Trains has confirmed that all train lines are operating as normally scheduled, and all CBD train stations remain open and operational.

Public Transport Victoria is continuing to monitor the situation, and up-to-the-minute details on diverted routes and service disruptions can be found on their website.

Stay safe, pals. We love you. x
