Here’s How Malcolm Turnbull Ended Up In Tears On Stan Grant’s New Show

Right now, the only person in the Australian media who could land a sit-down interview with the Prime Minister for their show’s debut episode is Stan Grant. If that wasn’t significant enough, the topics of discussion on NITV’s new current affairs program The Point actually brought Malcolm Turnbull to tears.

In a candid segment captured before the broad-reaching interview was filmed, Turnbull discussed a lullaby sung in the Ngunnawal language – a lullaby that was sung, from mother to daughter, as that very language and culture was being dismantled.

For the record, that’s the same language Turnbull recited at the start of his Closing The Gap address earlier this month. The lyrics to the song were intended to comfort, but in context, they stand as a pretty damning reminder of the disadvantages Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders have faced due to broader Australian interference.

The broad-reaching interview itself touched on many contemporary issues regarding the life and culture of Indigenous Australians, including disproportionately high levels of Indigenous incarceration, the struggles of those in regional areas, and amending the Constitution to better reflect Aboriginal Australians – a topic Grant has spoken on extensively.

Not extensive: outward demonstrations of emotion regarding those issues from our leaders. Grant made note of it in his closing remarks, saying the next challenge for the PM would be to turn that obvious sentiment into real change for Australia’s indigenous people.
