GoFundMe Donates $100,000 To Record-Breaking Campaign For Orlando Victims

Crowdfunding platform GoFundMe has chipped in $100k of their own cash towards a campaign to raise money for the surviving victims of the shooting of the gay club Pulse in Orlando, Florida.

The campaign has quickly become GoFundMe’s fastest growing and most successful ever, after smashing almost $3 million in the first 48 hours:
“We are beyond moved by the support from all corners of the world and all walks of life. From average Americans, large corporations, celebrities, musicians, artists, and political figures, over 65,000 donations have been made towards Equality Florida’s Pulse Victim Fund, totaling to $2.8 million dollars. We do not know the total costs for the victims of this horrific hate crime, therefore are working to raise as much as possible and disperse the funds as fast as possible.”
GoFundMe’s contribution is the biggest single donation, and will essentially cancel out the transaction fees associated with the campaign.
Apparently people have been donating so fast it’s been breaking the website:
“Due to high traffic, you may encounter an error message when making a donation. Go Fund Me is working to correct this issue, but in the meantime if this is encountered, please try making your donation again at another time.”
The money will be spent on looking after the 53 people who were injured after gunman Omar Mateen opened fire in the crowded night club.
The funds will be managed by the National Center for Victims of Crime, who also managed the funds for the victims of the Aurora shooting in 2012.
