GetUp Stages Its Own Version Of “8, The Play”

Exactly three months ago on Mardi Gras weekend, YouTube streamed the first live reading of ‘8, a new play written by Academy Award winning screenwriter and director Dustin Lance Black (Milk and J. Edgar) about the 2010 trial of Proposition 8 – the contentious constitutional amendment that took away the rights of same-sex Californians to marry (informally known as Schwarzeneggar vs. Basic Human Rights).

Using official court transcripts and first hand accounts, 8 will now take to the stage in Sydney for a one-off performance at the Sydney Town Hall supported by persistent inbox cloggers and social activists GetUp. With a cast that includes Georgie Parker, Magda Szubanski, Lisa McCune, Daniel MacPherson, Shane Jacobsen and the star of GetUp’s viral “It’s Time” campaign, Julian Shaw, (who is actually straight, sorry dudes – you should still go all the same) tickets to ‘8’ will set you back $150, but include entry to the after party (but not the after, after party), and proceeds go directly toward funding the campaign for marriage equality for the Green Lantern.

You can buy tickets here.
