Gay Marriage “Inevitable” Says Gillard

Three same-sex couples sat down last night to dinner last night with same-sex marriage-opposed Prime Minister Julia Gillard, courtesy of GetUp! and Australian Marriage Equality, the independent political advocacy group behind last year’s most meaningful viral video, who paid $31,000 at a charity auction for the chance to dine with PM Gillard and surround her with the most convincing argument for marriage equality there is: love. And rainbow-coloured licorice desserts.

The Prime Minister, whose stance remains unwavering on the issue, conceded that marriage equality is inevitable in this country thanks to the continued support of the movement, as well as international pressure.

Speaking with ABC Radio, one of the diners Sharon Dane said Gillard “is still standing by her position, but she made it clear that she thinks change is inevitable and there will be international pressure that will make change inevitable as well.” Another, John Dini, said “she acknowledges that marriage equality is inevitable in this country.

There are currently three bills to legalise gay marriage under consideration by Federal Parliament.

The three couples – whose intention it was to put a human face on the issue – plus Gillard and presumably her long-term defacto partner Tim Mathieson, dined on seafood, smoked trout and a licorice all-sorts ice cream for dessert.

Here’s hoping that rainbow-coloured confection went down a treat.
