A man was arrested on a New Year’s Day flight from Sydney to San Francisco after passengers claimed he launched into a ‘racist’ rant and refused to listen to the crew.
It’s alleged that the man, a 42-year-old American began his rant after two people who were seated on either side of him began conversing over the top of him. “The rant progressed from cursing Indians to Asians to Muslims to non-whites in general and calling flight crew faggots and fatasses,” said one passenger, who was seated several rows away. “He was subdued after the pilot announced the diversion to Auckland.”
A passenger posted video of the man’s altercation with flight attendants. No racist comments are captured, though passengers allege these occurred before the flight attendant attempted to calm him down.
“If you guys treat people right on these things, you see two last names the same don’t put someone else in the middle of them,” he said. “I’m not yelling … you want to hear me fucking yelling?”
“Do you know how cool it would be to have the aeroplane turned around because of me? You are going to do that? You do that? I’m being so impolite aren’t I? Fat ass”.
The flight was diverted to Auckland, and the man was refused entry into the country, instead being escorted away by police. All passengers were put up by United Airlines in Auckland due to the length of the delay and diversion.
