Dr Seuss Maximises The Cute, Uses New Book To Raise Money For Pet Adoption

You might not read it on a boat. But if you do happen to read it with a goat, then chances are you’ll be able to help raise a bit of dough for other animals in need of forever homes.

The new book from the long deceased Dr Seuss – the recently uncovered What Pet Should I Get? – hit shelves a few short weeks ago, chronicling the journey of a pair of siblings traversing a pet store, trying to make up their mind as to which furry creature will be their new best bud.
In celebration of the release, Seuss’ publisher Random House Children’s Books has set up a social media campaign to raise money for the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals – y’know, the ASPCA – largely as a really nice thing to do, and also one to get ahead of the inevitable criticisms re: Pet Store purchasing vs Shelter Adoption.
The publisher has been encouraging people to share photos of themselves with their adorable little mates on Twitter and Instagram with the accompanying hashtag #whatpet. For each photo posted, $1 will be donated to the ASPCA, up to a total of $15,000.

“In celebration of the book’s publication, Random House Children’s Books and Dr. Seuss Enterprises are pleased to announce a social media campaign that will support the work of the ASPCA (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) to help animals in need across the country.”

“The social campaign on behalf of What Pet Should I Get? celebrates Ted [Geisel]’s love for animals, and calls for all pet owners nationwide to share a photo of their pets, tagging it with the #whatpet campaign hashtag. For every photo shared on Twitter or Instagram with #whatpet, Random House Children’s Books and Dr. Seuss Enterprises will donate one dollar to the ASPCA, up to the first 15,000 photos.”

And because this is the internet, and photos of tiny animals is its core non-pornographic function, you can already bask in the majesty of people’s uploads.

Bask, we say!

#whatpet Max is very lazy but loves that Randomhouse is donating to the ASPCA for every picture with the hashtag whatpet!

If your small heart doesn’t grow three sizes looking at those little legends, then not even a Grinch could steal your Christmas – for it is already long gone.
