#DontMANcriminate: The Best Troll Campaign Ever? Let’s Bloody Hope So

Sometimes people who know the least, speak the loudest. Like that ‘mature age’ student at university that you hated. Ja feel?

An Indian media company called Maggcom decided to be the media version of that mature age student recently. They have coined the term ‘mancrimination’, and have gone to the extent of creating some kind of bizarre awareness campaign that makes very, very little sense. Let’s put it this way: you don’t exactly have to be Germaine Greer to question it’s logic.
‘Not one woman bought me a drink at the club last night :'(‘
Magcomm decided to ‘educate’ their readers, by giving examples of the horrible, terrible, very very bad things that men experience every day. Like, never getting free entry to bars, or being denied the essential human right that is having the door held open for them. Oh, and the fact that women in India have their own buses and trains which men are not allowed to use. Which, y’know… is for their safety… because of the extremely high amount of rape and sexual violence in India, especially on public transport.
Take a look for yourself. There’s more posters on the ‘Don’t Manscriminate’ Facebook page, too:
Now, this could be one of the stupidest things you’ve ever seen; or it could be the best troll campaign of all time. ‘But PEDESTRIAN.TV,’ you cry, ‘There’s some very silly people in this world, and there’s certainly someone silly enough to believe these things! Why would it be a troll?!’ That’s a very good and valid question, reader!
Here are some reasons why it just might be a troll:
1) The campaign was created by Jahanvi Maheshwari – who is a woman.
2) Most of the male celebrities (we wouldn’t say it’s super likely that they are aware their image is being used) have been quite vocal that they are avid supporters of feminism, including Elijah Wood, Jude Law, and Brad Pitt.
3) How could anyone actually be this deluded?
If it is real, it’s very harmful. It should be widely acknowledged that men of course can face extremely distressing issues that are directly associated to their gender, some of which have developed due to patriarchal societies. Men experience extremely high suicide rates and high levels of untreated mental illness, just to name a few. Campaigns like this trivialise the actual issues that men face, and downplay the credibility of men who try to speak out about real-life problems.
We’re in the shark tank now, people. Let’s end this piece on the note that the genders can work together to dismantle social systems that cause problems for everyone; that way, everyone gets to live in a safe and respectful space. Let’s just remember to think seriously and ignore the crazies.
