Court Jails 10 Men For Life Over 2012 Malala Yousafzai Shooting

In 2012, education activist Malala Yousafzai was shot in the head during an attack by the Pakistani Taliban. Yousafzai’s recovery and continued, fearless campaigning for education rights has garnered global support for the 17-year-old, who has since become the world’s youngest Nobel Peace Prize recipient.

Today, reports have emerged over a Pakistan court sentencing ten men in relation to the shooting of Malala Yousafzai, with life imprisonment being handed down to the unnamed men. According to the BBC, the ten men belonged to the Pakistani Taliban, however the details surrounding their case have been scarce – a statement from a press officer at the Pakistani court was cancelled, and lawyers involved in the case have reportedly declined to comment.

The ruling was allegedly leaked to a local TV station. According to CNN, the convicted may be eligible for release in 25 years time.
In 2012, Malala Yousafzai was a noted education activist, after penning an anonymous BBC blog at the age of 11, describing life under the Taliban; a year later, Yousafzai’s identity was revealed during press interviews. In October 2012, gunmen boarded Yousafzai’s school bus, opening fire before asking, “Who is Malala?”
