French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo – never one to shy away from controversy or doing exactly as they please – has released its first cover since the Paris attacks last week, and it’s basically one giant middle finger to ISIS.
It features a man downing a glass of Champagne (which is spilling out of his bullet holes, fyi) and is emblazoned with the words “They have arms. Fuck them. We have the Champagne!“

The cover riffs along similar themes of “screw you, ISIS” that have been coming out of Paris since the attacks last Friday, which claimed the lives of 129 people. It feels fairly prudent to say here that no, this is not to say this is a good OR bad reaction, and no, not all messages coming out of Paris are along the same lines, and yes, Waleed Aly‘s viral speech on Monday did implore the world not to fall into the “us vs them” mentality.
@mathieumadenian Et quand ont se réveille avec la gueule de bois, Charlie sort l’aspirine. Merci!

“And when (one) wakes up with a hangover, Charlie spells aspirin. Thank you!”
@mathieumadenian @betepolitique mille fois merci les dieux du dessin!

“Thousand times thank you gods of the drawing!”
@mathieumadenian Ce type n’a aucun talent naturel en plus d’avoir une tête à claques ! pitoyable…

“This type as no natural talent in addition to having a head slap!” (‘Scuse us if Google translate didn’t quite capture that one.)
Charlie Hebdo was itself the target of terror attacks in January this year, when three armed gunman stormed their Paris headquarters and killed 12 people.
Comparisons between the Charlie Hebdo attack and the ones last week were inevitably going to be drawn, but Jesus – this one from U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry is getting condemned left right and centre:
John Kerry: #ParisAttacks different from Charlie Hebdo, which had “a legitimacy…not a legitimacy, but a rational” pic.twitter.com/Dpzus104T5

No, @JohnKerry. There was no legitimacy & no rationale for the attacks on Charlie Hebdo. It was terrorism and murder of journalists.
