Cate Blanchett Condemns Refugee Policy, Compares Crisis To WWII

Beacon of light Cate Blanchett has weighed in on the Syrian refugee crisis currently flowing through Europe, at a premiere for Carol at the BFI London Film Festival overnight.

Speaking to Sky News, Cate Blanchett condemned the rhetoric engulfing refugee policy and lamented the asylum seeker crisis nearing breaking point, calling on governments to act on the “very complex” but “global” situation.

“It’s a very complex situation but it’s a global issue and it’s very hard for the countries who have been very open to the Syrian refugees.

The more other countries don’t step up to the plate it puts a great burden on those countries and those populations.”

Blanchett also drew comparisons between World War II, and the potential for today’s crisis to be steeped in remorse by future generations looking retrospectively.

“Clearly these people are in massive crisis and if you think back to the second World War, knowing what we know now, we don’t want to look back in 50 years time and think we weren’t there, we didn’t help.”

CB has long been a staunch advocate for strengthening asylum seeker policy globally, as a public supporter of the UNHCR, making a call-to-action video last month, encouraging viewers to donate directly to the organisation. “There are thousands of families all over Europe in desperate need of our care and support,” Blanchett said in September.
