Bronwyn Bishop Still Technically Speaker, Still Technically On $6,500 A Week

Despite widespread outrage yesterday over Bronwyn Bishop‘s cushy retirement package – which includes free flights, because justice has a sense of humour – we’re buckling in for more this morning.

It’s come to everyone’s attention that, as of right now, Bronny is still *technically* the Speaker and thereby *technically* on her $341,477 a year salary.

A new Speaker won’t be elected till next Monday, when Parliament resumes. Until that time – under the Presiding Officers Act – Bishop is still financially treated as Speaker, without actually doing any “official duties”. This week she’s banking her usual earnings of $6,567.

Today, it’s Labor‘s waste watch spokesman Pat Conroy‘s turn as the outrage mouthpiece, telling Fairfax she’s “in a world of her own if she thinks this is acceptable.”

As of two days ago, Bishop was still planning to recontest her Mackellar seat. Okay then.

If you were sitting there, idly wondering to yourself “What do Bronwyn Bishops’ fellow retirees think of her cushy retirement package?” then boy, is it your lucky day – we asked ’em.
