Behind The Scenes With Kate Moss For Balmain

Straying from your usual behind-the-scenes video, photographers Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin decided on a more surreal approach when shooting Kate Moss for the latest Balmain campaign.

Setting up four hidden cameras, Moss’s performance was captured from different angles in a Big Brother surveillance-style film. The footage was then edited with animation by Jo Ratcliffe which drew inspiration from Disney, Arthur Rackham, Willo and the Wisp, and Tim Burton. The idea was to reveal the inner workings of Moss’s psyche. The result is a short film, titled “Everglade”, named after its soundtrack: a song by Antony and the Johnsons; which complements the films haunting but fantastical feel. Watch below.

“We’ve had the idea for this video for some time. We are fascinated with the different realities going on in one shoot and so the music, the animation, Kate’s movements and the camera angle represent these layers of perception,” says Van Lamsweerde.

The Dutch duo are known for exploring surrealism in their work and this latest collaboration with Ratcliffe seems like an ideal partnership, as they challenge the perception of perspective and reality to extraordinary effect.
