BBC4 To Screen Adaptation Of ‘The Slap’

A screen adaptation of Christos Tsiolkas‘ ‘The Slap’, is set to hit BBC4 later this year.

The broadcaster acquired the rights to the series, currently being filmed for ABC1. It’s based on the best-selling novel of the same name which, according to sales figures, every Australian read at least once in the past year or stole from their significant other. Winner of the Commonwealth Writer’s Prize and longlisted for The Booker, ‘The Slap’ earned notoriety and praise for its depictions of the problems in multicultural suburbia, violence, drug use and sex. Lots of sex. In fact, the novel was nominated last year for the ‘Bad Sex In Literature’ award. There’s something you wouldn’t want to write home about.

The eight-part series is set to screen here soon and hits the UK in October. It will feature Hotel Rwanda actress Sophie Okonedo, Cold Case‘s Jonathan La Paglia, Melissa George and champion Wog Boy, Alex Dimitriades. It follows on from Chris Lilley‘s Angry Boys, which was co-produced by BBC3 and started screening over in the UK in late June.

Well, at least they won’t think we’re all from Neighbours anymore.
