Australian Woman Hurt In Running of The Bulls Because That’s What Happens When You Run With Bulls

An Australian woman has sustained serious organ injuries after being gored in the back by a bull during the Running of the Bulls in Pamplona, Spain because that is something historically likely to happen when you run with bulls.

The unidentified 23 year old New South Wales woman sustained multiple rib fractures and damage to her right lung and is now in critical condition after undergoing surgery at Navarra Hospital in Pamplona. The woman was hospitalised Sunday evening after being hit by a half-tonne Miura bull in the final run of this year’s nine day San Fermin festival.

Four other runners were injured during the Sunday run including a 39-year-old man from California, a 23-year-old man from Madrid and two other men from Navarra, according to a statement released by the regional government body responsible for organising the event. Three men were gored during Friday’s run.

Fifteen fatalities have been recorded since record-keeping for the event began in 1911, with the most recent being a 27 year old Spanish man who was gored in the neck, heart and lungs in 2009.

As is tradition, the bulls will be killed by matadors in a nationally televised bullfight marking the end of the week-long festivities.
