Aussie Singer Cops Homophobic Abuse At Basketball, Responds Fabulously

On Saturday night, the Rod Laver Arena hosted a FIBS Oceania Championship game.

Previous to the championship basketball starting, Australian opera singer Kanen Breen performed the national anthem, wearing an all-black suit and a glittery rainbow tie. Breen, an openly gay man, wore the tie to add to the commentary on marriage equality; to show that despite our anthem stating we are ‘free’, our lack of recognition of sam-sex marriage says otherwise.
However, some disgusting cretin in the audience decided to ignore Breen’s important message and instead comment on his attire, yelling an extremely homophobic slur beginning with ‘F’ (which this writer ardently refuses to type) after he’d finished his performance.
Breen’s closest friend and co-parent, Jacqui Dark, posted on Facebook shortly after the event, and her post has now been shared over 600 times so far.

So, something happened last night after Kanen Breen nailed the anthem. Something … not very nice. I felt compelled to…

Breen’s response to the homophobic jeers was one of absolute class; it seems as though he could not give a singular fuck about loud homophobic dickbags, which is bloody fair enough, tbh:
“I love my tie, and I wore it quite deliberately whilst singing about a nation that purports to be free and fair (but which clearly, for so many, is not) in a flamboyant little protest,” Breen said on Facebook.
“Clearly one individual amongst the 15,000 basketball fans felt I was a little too fabulous – his problem, not mine. I learned a very long time ago not to value the opinions of people for whom I have no respect.”
Here’s a lil’ life lesson for the dude who yelled: when someone is that fabulous, your petty insults are utterly meaningless.
P.S. you’re on the wrong side of history, buddy.
P.P.S no one cares what you think and also you’re the worst.
OOOKAY? BYE FELICIA.
