Anti-Terrorism Safety System Fast-Tracked For Melb CBD After London Attack

Following the terrorist attack on London Bridge and the recent siege in the Melbourne suburb of Brighton, the Victorian Government has brought forward their plans to erect security barriers in the Melbourne CBD
The plan was first announced earlier this year after the horrific Bourke Street attack, and a budget of $10 million allocated to bring in an automatic safety system that could be activated in the event of a terrorist threat.
However, Premier Daniel Andrews has already put some of those funds towards erecting temporary bollards around the city, telling the media:
“Constructing permanent bollards will take some time, [so] … I have directed that temporary bollards will be put in place at Federation Square and Bourke Street and a number of other sites.

“There’s no time to be wasted here when we think about London and we think about other tragic events on the other side of the world and events very close to home, we need to take these steps.”
He said that he wasn’t disclosing exactly where else the bollards would be erected, citing security reasons.
“I do want to stress though, we’re not about changing the way people go about their business. This is a beautiful city and we should cherish every part of it.”
