Almost 140 Rabbits, Guinea Pigs Need New Homes After RSPCA Raid

Do you live in the Canberra area? Are you ready to open your home and heart to a creature of the cute furry or feathered variety? The good people at the RSPCA may be soon need your help.
ABC News report that, in a raid this week on a Canberra home, almost 140 pets, including rabbits, guinea pigs, rats, mice and poultry, were found, living in unbearably crowded conditions.
In total, 137 animals were seized from the suburban property, and taken to an RSPCA facility for vet checks, where staff reportedly worked late into the night to get them documented.
Though most were apparently found to be in good health, many were pregnant, because what else are you going to do all day in such cramped conditions, I guess?
Please note that the adorable guinea pig above is not from this week’s raid, but one that the Getty Images database prepared earlier.
The RSPCA are currently pushing for greater restrictions on the number of pets that can be kept in a home, as at present, these restrictions only apply to cats and dogs.
“So if you have someone that really has a thing for small animals, for them to get rabbits and guinea pigs, rats or mice or in some cases poultry as well – there is just nothing that restricts them,” said chief executive Tammy Ven Dange.
“So by the time we are allowed to do something, which means there is an animal welfare condition, then it is out of control.”
Apparently, “most” of the animals from this recent raid will be available for adoption soon. RSPCA Canberra can be contacted here
