Following the strategic leaking of “Zero” NYC three-piece Yeah Yeah Yeah’s espoused a heavier reliance on synthesizers and a departure from the distorted squall that is Nick Zinner’s trademark. Could Yeah Yeah Yeah’s sans guitar ever work?
With the leaking of second single “Heads Will Roll” the band’s dance floor aspirations become even more apparent. “Off, off, off with your head. Dance, dance, dance ’til you’re dead” sings Karen O in the remix friendly call to arms. Death by dance? There are worse ways to die.
I can’t tell whether this is middle of the road electro-rock or something more substantial. Judging from the two leaked tracks, Yeah Yeah Yeahs are pulling a “Killers” as in lets “kill” all credibility and make synth pop by numbers. The key difference being The Killers were shit to begin with. I’m a big fan of YYY’s so I hope they prove me wrong with the release of the rest of the album, but right now all I can hear is derivative, uninspired, unemotional, new-wave lite. No, no, no.
