Wu-Tang Clan Internet Scam

First it was Billy Corgan announcing open auditions to find Smashing Pumpkins members, and now apparently Wu-Tang Clan are holding an online competition to recruit the next nine ‘Generals’ of the Wu-Tang? Or specifically, people with Witty Unpredictable Talent And Natural Game.

Along with a stand-alone website, the competition is also being spruiked via a youtube video that resembles a poor man’s version of the Law & Order opening credits or a really unsuccesful promo clip for Staten Island tourism:

Something about this is starting to smell like Madoff.

Firstly, neither the band’s official website or myspace mentions this alleged competition anywhere.
Secondly, to register for the competition, entrants need to pay a registration fee of between $30 and $85 (depending on the timeliness of their registration) which is weird; especially because:
thirdly, there’s a Disclaimer of Liability and Indemnification included on the registration page which reads as thus:

DUE TO THE OVERWHELMING RESPONSE THE LOCATIONS HAVE BEEN CHANGED. THE NEW LOCATIONS WILL NOT BE DISCLOSED AT THIS TIME. ONCE YOU COMPLETE THE REGISTRATION, YOU WILL RECEIVE AN EMAIL WITH THE NAME AND ADDRESS OF THE VENUE IN THE CITY OF YOUR CHOICE. YOU WILL ALSO RECEIVE THE DATE AND TIME OF YOUR AUDITION BY MAY 10, 2010.

WTF?

I’m calling RZA to sort this shit out.
To be continued…
