White Shadows’ New Video Is An Ethereal Dream

White Shadows, the new project from Craig Nicholls (The Vines), Nick Littlemore (Empire Of The Sun, PNAU) and Sam La More (Peking Duk, Parachute Youth), has released their first video, and it is an ethereal journey through the brain of everyone ever (if your brain is well-lit, defies the laws of physics, and it’s a bit windy).

The first single, ‘Give Up Give Out Give In’ landed about six weeks ago, and has been on pretty heavy rotation on Triple J since. The song oozes summer euphoria, but we all know that summery pop music hasn’t really ever been Craig Nicholls’ thing. He agrees, saying,

On first listen, if you’re not paying attention, it’s a very happy record. Yet the lyrics are very dark. I hope people don’t listen to it and think it’s just a pop record.

He’s right – the bouncy pop track next to his ‘confessional’ lyrics is a bit of a stark comparison:

“Give up give out give in your time / It’s overrated I hate my … / Give up give out give in your life /It’s all the same but I get by”.

The video highlights an internal battle, and the end result is a beautiful collection of mystical, sculptural imagery that will awaken those voices in your head that keep telling you that you need a change. Pop escapism ain’t a dirty term, and the video for Give Up Give Out Give In is worth a watch.

White Shadows‘ debut album is set to be released this April.
