Today is an exciting day for TV On The Radio fans with the release of their fifth album Nine Types of Light, as well as a feature-length film comprising music videos for each of the album’s ten tracks. Every clip has been made by a different filmmaker so each one offers up a unique (though not necessarily good) piece to a really diverse visual collage – which makes for a pretty good match for the TVOTR sound on this record.
Like the band’s previous albums, Nine Types of Light refuses to be pigeonholed as just ‘experimental rock’. From heavy industrial guitar jams to funk rock to jazz to soft pop ballads, there’s a lot of influences experimented with here. The film’s various sections or ‘tracks’ combine interviews, live-action and animation and are well worth checking out – either all at one time or track by track. As far as the tunes themselves go, my pick of the tracks is “Second Song” (which you can hear/see at 5.56minutes).
