Sweet merciful crap, we hope you’re wearing thick dacks RN, because they’re all in severe danger of being blown the hell out.
The sprawling and immersive VIVID Sydney has launched its full 2017 programme earlier this morning, and if you’re into the idea of getting fully involved with some positively shithot live acts and art installations, this is gonna be right up your alley.
VIVID’s flagship music lineup is as big as its been in recent memory. We already know almighty US indie outfit Fleet Foxes will be heading our way as part of the roster, but today they’ve officially been joined by the likes of Goldfrapp, AIR, Nick Murphy, and a slew of other amazing stuff that’ll melt your brains.
Like what, you ask?
WELL THEN.
Legendary English electronic duo Goldfrapp will be throwing down an exclusive performance for VIVID as the festival’s headliners when they take over Carriageworks on June 2nd.
The Sydney Opera House is once again playing host to a raft of VIVID music acts from both home and abroad; along with the already announced Fleet Foxes, we now know that Nick Murphy, Laura Marling, Camp Cope, AIR (appearing in Australia for the first time in 9 years), and Sampha are among the roster of acts set to tread the boards at the iconic dish rack.
Elsewhere, Dappled Cities are set to present their brand new album ‘| | | | |‘ (pronounced “Five”) in an extra-special show at the City Recital Hall on June 4th.
Martin Place is once again being transformed into a sprawling public dance floor for ‘IGNITE,’ a melding of nightclub bangers with a full symphony orchestra backing them up; picture ‘Sandstorm‘ with a philharmonic drop, and start stretching to go throw some serious shapes.
Paul Mac will be – quite literally – at the centre of the immersive Sound Bubble Sound Party, which will take over the entire City Recital Hall, transforming all three levels into a wholly unique sound and light experience, which features a three-metre square clear inflatable cube as a performance platform in the dead centre of everything.
AND OH YEAH, if all that weren’t enough as is, the goddamned Avalanches are quietly gonna chuck a block party down near the Opera House where they will play ‘Since I Left You‘ *in its entirety* for the first time on Australian soil since 2001. The group is bringing along DJ Shadow, Briggs, and Sampa the Great to help them pump out the hits from their genre-defining masterpiece, which you should run (not walk) to get tickets to.
Elsewhere in the programme, the hugely popular ‘Lights for the Wild‘ sculpture installation at Taronga Zoo will return after a spectacular debut last year. A giant set of illuminated eyes will follow punters walking through the Royal Botanical Gardens for ‘You Lookin’ At Me?‘. Steampunk gets a trot in the forward/backward-looking ‘Future City, Smart City‘ which will take over streets and buildings in the city centre. And legendary Obama “HOPE” artist Shepard Fairey will grace our shores to relate his trademark DIY approach to art and social voice, as well as create a large-scale public mural live on a Sydney CBD wall, as the headlining name for VIVID Ideas.
Honestly, the whole thing looks insanely good and if you’re in the area you’d be a dang fool not to get involved in some way.
VIVID Sydney 2017 runs from the 26th of May until the 17th of June.
