The Smith Street Band Unveils Caustic Anti-Abbott Track About Asylum Seekers

Say what you want about conservative government, but it has a tendency to cause some blisteringly great rock n roll to happen.

Now that we’re over a full year into the first term of the Abbott Government, it seems like it’s a mere matter of time before the famously left-leaning music industry begins producing tracks inspired by – or in spite of – Governmental policy; and ones that float to the surface of the mainstream at that.
Melbourne’s own band of legends The Smith Street Band have done exactly that, unveiling a track brimming with anger directed towards Prime Minister Tony Abbott and his actions and policy concerning Asylum Seekers.
The title of the track? “Wipe That Shit-Eating Grin Off Your Punchable Face.” So, y’know, punches aren’t exactly being pulled here.
The track is being released as both a digital download and a 7″ inch record, with the band announcing that proceeds generated from the record will be going to the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre, as part of a planned Australia Day charity show benefiting the ASRC and Oxfam, held at both the Reverence Hotel on January 25th, and the Corner Hotel on the 26th.
And as if there were any doubt who the target of the song’s lyrics were, here’s the record’s cover art.
Yep.
This song’s about something we’re fiercely concerned with – Our government’s dehumanising stance on refugees and the empty promises of our current government in general.
The song will be available for purchase from tomorrow. Until then, you canwrap yr listening ears around it right now.
