We previously reported that the genre bending trio of Santogold, Pharrell Williams and Julian Casablancas had written a song exclusively for Converse, the accompanying film clip has now been released – chucks in tow.
Perpetually the shoe of choice for the musically inclined among us, the humble all-star has seamlessly dovetailed music and street fashion for decades. I bought my first pair when I was 16 in poor emulation of Kurt Cobain. Five years on and they are still in my possession – hole ridden, caked with mud from countless festivals, blue biro scrawled across the toes (Beatles lyrics if you must now, but ones that are pretty cheesy).
The track in question – “My Drive Thru” isn’t that great given the varied talents at work (throwaway lyrics aplenty) the clip however, is a 2D wonderland of hipster cardboard cut outs come to life. It reminds me of the first time I smoked hydroponic weed (around the same time I bought my first pair of Chucks coincidentally) I could barely walk home and thought that I was in a giant pop book.
Though this smacks of Marketing 2.0 and the song is utter horse shit, I can’t be angry at Converse for trying to convince a new crop of kids to wear their kicks. Mine have served me well.
