The wait is over. Ken West’s three white whales have been publicly unmasked at an event held in Sydney tonight, with rumours holding true and Blur, Pearl Jam and Arcade Fire confirmed as the heavyweight trviumvirate at the top of the 2014 Big Day Out tree. For evergreen Seattle grunge outfit Pearl Jam, 2014 marks their inaugural performance at the monolithic Australian music festival. It will be the second for the ecclesiastical Montreal indie collective Arcade Fire who played during daylight in 2008 but have since released a Grammy Award winning album and threaten to do the same this year. Britpop pioneers Blur will play their first live show in Australia since 1997, a performance drought sufficient in length to warrant the opening of a new stage to celebrate its breaking (they have – it’s called the Love Stage). Other highlights include West Coast rapper with singular vice and multiple personalities Snoop Dogg aka Snoop Lion, Diplo side project Major Lazer and local Australian festival heroes Tame Impala and Flume.
