New Wolf Parade Hit Or Miss?

You could blame the lukewarm critical response to Wolf Parade’s rambling sophomore LP At Mount Zoomer on its proximity to greatness or as Blueprint-era Jay-Z explains: “Yeah you shinin’ but the only thing you’re leavin’ out/ You’re a candle in the sun – that shit don’t even out”. For the purposes of this post the sun is Wolf Parade’s outstanding 2005 debut Apologies To The Queen Mary and the candle is everything they’ve released ever since.

Which isn’t to say At Mount Zoomer is terrible. It’s good, great even, but when juxtaposed to the pathos and unhinged vibrancy of its predecessor, good transforms into middle of the road meh. Still, any new Wolf Parade output is worth investigating and the band have just dropped two new tracks from their forthcoming longplayer “Expo 86”, out June 29. In keeping with the band’s democratic spirit we have the the Boeckner-lead “Ghost Pressure” and the Krug-lead “What Did My Lover Say? (It Always Had to Go This Way)” streaming below. So far the office is divided on this one so we’re going to throw it to you. What do you think – hit or miss?
