Instagram Bans #EDM, Reinstates #EDM & #Curvy, Sort Of

Another day, another hashtag singled out among Instagram’s ranks, friends.

On Instagram, the #Curvy tag was recently barred for  and reasons—causing a backlash among body positive users. Today, a fleeting drama for #EDM has almost come to a close, after an influx of nudes tainted the tag, causing Instagram to completely wipe #EDM from appearing in searches.

Coinciding with Instagram’s increase of ads being spliced between posts on users’ feeds this week, #EDM became victim to the network’s increasingly tight community guidelines. “We block (i.e. make unsearchable) certain hashtags when they are consistently being used to share images and videos that violate our Community Guidelines,” Instagram says.

But within days of the ban blocking users, and thousands of tweets and instagrams published in protest, #EDM was resurrected to gurn another day. Sort of.

While users can still search #EDM—11 million posts and counting—only a few dozen images from the tag have been made available to the public in Top Posts. The typical rolling feed of Most Recent posts remains blocked.

Instagram claims a wipe of Most Recent posts curbs the presence of “abusive content in a highly visible place.”

The same also goes for #Curvy – its 2 million + posts are still there, but only 30 images can be accessed via Top Posts.

“We may remove the Most Recent section of a hashtag page if people are using the hashtag to post abusive content in a highly visible place. To protect the quality of the hashtag page, we may hide that section temporarily. For a limited period of time you’ll only see Top Posts.”

Welcome back, #EDM and #Curvy. Sort of.
